Jon Stewart took aim at Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Monday night, criticizing the Pentagon chief for lashing out at reporters during a live press conference about the escalating conflict with Iran.

Hegseth’s appearance was meant to reassure Americans after the surprise military campaign that began early Saturday, when U.S. and Israeli forces launched strikes on Tehran. The attack killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and targeted additional military and weapons sites.

The press conference drew attention not only for its subject matter, but for the makeup of the press pool. Many of the reporters present represented Trump-friendly outlets, including One America News, The Federalist, and The Epoch Times. CNN media analyst Brian Stelter reported that Hegseth appeared to be working from a pre-approved list of questioners.

That may explain why he seemed caught off guard when NBC News correspondent Courtney Kube pressed him on how long the war might last. Hegseth dismissed her inquiry as “the typical NBC sort of ‘gotcha’ type,” a response that Stewart seized on during his monologue.

“Typical gotcha?” Stewart said, before joking in the voice of a reporter, “How long will the war last, sir? Zing!” Another journalist who asked whether the conflict could drag on longer than expected was also rebuked. Hegseth snapped, “Did you not hear my remarks?”

Stewart compared the tense exchange to someone “chugging a little too much Epic Fury,” referencing the administration’s name for the operation against Iran. “I know you’re the defense secretary, but you don’t need to get so defensive,” he added.

For Stewart, the bigger issue was transparency. He argued that the administration has not provided clear answers about the scope or duration of the conflict. “I can’t think of anything more dismissive and arrogant than this president not directly addressing the American people and explaining this war more thoroughly,” Stewart said.

President Donald Trump has addressed the situation in videos posted to Truth Social and through phone interviews with outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Axios, and Politico. Critics, however, say his explanations have lacked specifics.

The New York Times reported that Trump had “offered several seemingly contradictory visions of how power might be transferred to a new government or even whether the existing Iranian power structure would run that government or be overthrown.”

At a White House ceremony on Monday, Trump said, “Whatever it takes,” when asked about the war’s duration. “Right from the beginning, we projected four to five weeks, but we have the capabilities to go far longer than that.” He also pushed back on suggestions that he might lose interest.

“Somebody said today, they said: ‘Oh, well, the president wants to do it really quickly; after that, he’ll get bored’. I don’t get bored. There’s nothing boring about this… No, I don’t get bored. I never get bored.” Stewart closed with a stark assessment: “We’re all just along for the ride in a war with no clear purpose, no end in sight. It’s all just at the whims of Donald Trump.”
