Authorities have revealed new information regarding the arrest of a Norco man suspected of starting the massive Line Fire, which has devastated parts of San Bernardino County. Justin Wayne Halstenberg, 34, is being held without bail after being taken into custody for allegedly igniting the fire near Baseline Road in Highland on September 4.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department shared the details during a news conference on Wednesday, one day after Halstenberg’s arrest. Sheriff Shannon Dicus stated, “While we’re still in the thrust of the preliminary investigation, we believe this was intentional.” However, officials have yet to determine the motive behind the alleged arson and did not disclose what was used to start the fire.

Halstenberg was arrested after authorities obtained a search warrant at his residence, marking a significant step in the ongoing investigation. The Line Fire has already burned 54 square miles and remains only 14% contained, according to fire officials.

As the fire spread, evacuation orders were issued for several communities, including portions of Big Bear, Running Springs, Forest Falls, Angelus Oaks, and Wrightwood. Residents from the Big Bear dam east to Wildrose Lane and south to Bluff Lake Basin were among those told to leave.

Firefighters continue to battle the blaze under difficult conditions. Fabian Herrera, a spokesperson for the Line Fire, explained that a dense cloud of dark smoke provided temporary shade for the crews, helping them manage the flames ahead of anticipated high winds.

Two main highways serving Big Bear, Highway 18 from the west and Highway 38 from the east, were closed due to the fire. Residents are encouraged to monitor evacuation orders and road closures through Cal Fire’s interactive map for updates.
