A 4-year-old boy from Indiana is dead, and two others are injured after a driver ran a red light while speeding. According to reports from local outlets like FOX 59, WTHR, and The Indianapolis Star, the crash happened on May 7 in Indianapolis. Alan Marcelo Salas-Garcia, the young boy, was riding in a trailer seat attached to the back of his dad’s bicycle when tragedy struck. A Dodge Charger, speeding through the intersection, hit both the father and son.
The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Raymond Street, where the driver was traveling east at a high speed. The driver ran the red light at the intersection with State Avenue, causing the vehicle to jump the curb and crash into the grass. After the collision, the driver fled the scene on foot.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), Alan’s father, Cristobal Salas, was critically injured in the crash. IMPD Night Watch Captain Don Weilhammer explained that Alan’s father had the walk signal at the crosswalk when the crash occurred. “The bicyclist was in the crosswalk,” he told FOX 59. “He had the walk symbol. The driver of the other vehicle that was struck by the Charger had the green light.” Weilhammer also clarified that the light had been red for a significant amount of time before the crash, meaning the father was well into the crosswalk when the driver sped through.
The impact of the crash was devastating. Alan was rushed to the hospital but was tragically pronounced dead about an hour later. Meanwhile, Cristobal Salas was in stable condition, as confirmed by the family the following day.
The Dodge Charger also struck a Honda that had a green light, further complicating the scene. The IMPD quickly locked down nearby neighborhoods, deploying drones and police dogs in hopes of catching the driver, but after four hours, they were unable to find the suspect. As of May 9, an arrest had not been made.
The crash has left the community heartbroken. Friends, neighbors, and even local business owners have expressed their grief over the incident. Tommy Jacob, the general manager of Quality Liquor, which has security cameras that captured the crash, described the scene as “awful.” “That Charger was flying… They didn’t even attempt to stop,” Jacob said, adding that he hasn’t stopped crying since the incident.
Alan’s 17-year-old brother shared his devastation, saying he still couldn’t believe his brother was gone. Neighbors also spoke about the impact the tragedy has had, with one neighbor, Greg Howard, mentioning that East Raymond Street has become increasingly unsafe for pedestrians. “It’s like a highway over there,” Howard said. “People are constantly flying through it, making it unsafe for people to cross those roads safely.”
IMPD officials, including Captain Weilhammer, have stressed that the crash could’ve been prevented if the driver hadn’t been speeding and ignored the red light. “All this could’ve been avoided if we had done the speed limit and paid attention to the lights,” Weilhammer added. “Slow down, we have two families that are going to be affected by this tragedy.”
