More than three decades after the brutal murders that stunned America, Lyle and Erik Menendez just got a second shot at freedom. A Los Angeles judge on Tuesday gave them a new sentence — 50 years to life — replacing their original punishment of life without parole. That decision now allows the infamous brothers to walk free as early as next month when the parole board reviews their case.

The courtroom was tense and emotional as the hearing unfolded, with family members pleading for leniency and painting a picture of two men who had changed over the years. They’ve already spent over 30 years locked up for the shotgun killings of their wealthy parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills mansion back in 1989.

“I killed my mom and dad. I make no excuses. I take full responsibility,” Lyle said during the hearing, appearing via video link. He sounded calm but resolute, a far cry from the scared young man who stood trial in the early ’90s.

The crime was shocking and remains one of the most talked-about cases in American true crime history. Jose was shot five times, including in the knees, and Kitty was gunned down as she tried to crawl away, a haunting image that haunted jurors and the public alike. The brothers initially tried to pin the murders on the mob, but their story kept changing until the truth unraveled.

Since then, Lyle and Erik have built a new narrative — one where they were victims themselves. They claim their parents, particularly their father, subjected them to years of sexual and emotional abuse. That alleged trauma, they say, eventually boiled over into rage and fear, leading to the deadly night.

Erik, like his brother, didn’t hold back at the resentencing. He admitted what he did without trying to shift the blame. “I have no excuse, no justification. I take full responsibility,” he told the court. “I reached out to my brother for help and convinced him we couldn’t escape. I fired five rounds at my parents and went to get more ammunition. I lied to the police, lied to my family. I am truly sorry.”

Their legal team and supporters argue that decades behind bars have transformed them. The brothers have reportedly been model inmates, staying out of trouble and showing genuine remorse. Whether that’s enough to sway the parole board remains to be seen.

This unexpected development is reigniting the debate that’s followed this case for years — were the Menendez brothers cold-blooded killers chasing an inheritance, or damaged sons lashing out in desperation?

What’s certain now is that freedom is on the table, and after 34 years behind bars, the Menendez brothers could soon be stepping into a very different world than the one they left in 1989.
