Kate Garraway shares ‘shocking’ first picture of husband Derek in hospital

Kate Garraway, 53, has shared home shot footage of her husband Derek Draper fighting for his life in hospital after contracting Covid in March 2020.

Kate can be seen looking emotional as she looked at her husband Derek in his hospital bed, with the video showing a glimpse of the 53-year-old, who Kate has said has lost over 8st in weight since falling ill.

In the first emotional clip for her new ITV documentary Finding Derek which airs later this month, the Good Morning Britain host says: “Derek is the sickest person the team of doctors have treated this year.”

“Is he going to be able to come back or will he be alive but no longer the person he was?”

The screen goes black as a message reads: “One year later, Derek is still in hospital.”

Taking to Twitter, one fan wrote: “@kategarraway I saw the trailer for finding Derek omg in tears at 7:30am sending you and the kids so much love.

“I will watch it next week and probably be in tears all the way through.

“You are such an inspiration Kate and so bloody strong.”

Kate recently admitted she fears what her husband’s life will be like when he is eventually able to leave hospital.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, she said: “The very worst moment was when they said he could be locked in forever. And I just thought this is a horror story.

“I don’t know if he’ll ever have any kind of life again. We just don’t know. The change in his body is shocking.”

While Derek is now free from Covid-19, the virus has wreaked havoc on his internal organs.

It’s understood that his kidneys have failed and he has suffered serious damage to his liver and his pancreas.

On top of that, he also is said to have ‘holes is in his heart’.

In a shocking revelation, Kate says she feared Derek has passed away after a hospital mix up.

She recalled to the publication that she was left “just sitting on the phone waiting to know if he’d died or not” in the early stages of his Covid battle.

Kate explained how a hospital worker told her: “He may have died. Somebody will call you back.”

She then had a harrowing 24 hours in limbo. Luckily, it was an error.

She added: “Then it turned out that somebody had died who had a similar name to his.”

Speaking on GMB earlier this month, Kate admitted at one point it looked like Derek could be stuck in hospital for ever.

Kate said: “The very worst moment was when they said he could be locked in forever.

“And I just thought, this is a horror story.

“I don’t know if he’ll ever have any kind of life again. We just don’t know.”

Derek was first taken into hospital at the end of March last year, making his battle the longest in the UK.

He was placed into a medical coma by doctors to aid his recovery, and was later in a minimal state of consciousness.

Kate has had her home renovated ahead of her husband’s home, having ramps fitted, the doors widened for wheelchair access and installing a wet room.
