Meghan Markle is stirring the royal pot again—this time with a surprising use of her former royal title that’s got palace insiders raising their eyebrows.
Despite stepping back from royal duties in 2020 and being asked not to use the “Her Royal Highness” styling, Meghan has been slipping it back into use, not subtly either.
During a recent interview, cosmetics entrepreneur Jamie Kern Lima revealed that Meghan sent her a surprise gift package. Sounds sweet enough—until you hear the card that came with it. It read: “With Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex.” Yep, that’s the same HRH title she’s not supposed to use anymore.
Kern Lima, clearly touched by the gesture, shared how she’d been overwhelmed with a house full of guests when the unexpected treat landed on her doorstep. “I had a very full house and all of a sudden, I get word that you dropped off this gift basket with ice creams, homemade strawberry sauce to put on top of the ice cream just to see if that helps lighten my load,” she said, reported the Sun.
But not everyone saw the gesture in such a positive light.
Royal author Ingrid Seward didn’t hold back when weighing in on the HRH signature. “I think if her late grandmother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth, were still around, she would be highly offended, as she was very sensitive about that,” she said.
Seward pointed out the Queen’s firm stance on the issue, recalling how Diana and Sarah Ferguson were both told to stop using their HRH titles after their royal exits. “The Queen didn’t remove HRH but told them not to use it,” she explained.
With the Queen no longer around, Seward suggests that Meghan and Harry might be testing boundaries now, perhaps assuming the rules are a bit looser these days. “But she isn’t here anymore, so maybe Harry and Meghan think they can get away with it,” she added.
It’s another moment that’s sure to reignite the never-ending debate over the Sussexes’ place in the royal fold. While fans may see Meghan’s note as a harmless flourish or simply an old habit, royal watchers say it’s a subtle but bold move that wouldn’t have gone unnoticed back at the Palace.
